Veeam - Good Backup Product With System and Data Protection

Rating: 10 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Veeam Data Platform (CDP), replication and backup to protect our database, VMs and files. CDP ensure realtime backup and recovery for our databases and most critical information without downtime; ongoing replication backs up our important servers and VMs; backup is used to back up all our regular VMs and files. The three tier Veeam backup strategies provide us different levels of redundancy, backup and system protection.

Pros

  • Continuous Data Protection for databases without downtime
  • Veeam replication protects important servers, VMs and files
  • Veeam backup backs up all the regular servers, objects and files

Cons

  • For Veeam Data Platform (CDP), once it's switched to secondary, we have to rebuild the scenario to switch back. We can't switch back and forth as necessary.

Likelihood to Recommend

1. CDP continuous protection is good for critial servers and VMs that don't expect downtime,

2. Replication is good for important services and VMs that you can define interval and RTO,

3. Veeam Backup can back up any files, systems and servers easily at customized configuration.

Veeam works well and is a value for our company.

Rating: 10 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Veeam to back up VMware and stand-alone clients. We need to have our business-critical devices back online within an hour (RTO) and to have no more than 15 minutes of our past processes lost (RPO). Veeam also allows us to test code by restoring production servers into a test environment and to apply changes without risking our production servers. This is invaluable for accurate and timely fixes and improvements.

Pros

  • The ease of use in creating jobs and adding clients enables our new and less skilled administrators to work efficiently, quickly, and accurately.
  • The same ease of use is essential for junior admins as well. Backups are quickly and accurately restored, allowing our networking team to bring clients back to production within expected times.
  • The ability to create a restore for testing and to remove it quickly has proven to be an excellent asset for our production and DB teams.

Cons

  • They could simplify the On-demand Sandbox capabilities. The current setup seems overly complicated and is not very performant.
  • I would like to see more documentation on how to use Veeam with Proxmox, as that is the platform we are moving to.
  • I would like the ability to see more detail in the failure logs, as the reports from the Veeam Backup and Restore client aren't very helpful. Some way to easily access the log in a parsed format would help with the (few) difficulties we've had.

Likelihood to Recommend

I have been a Sysadmin for 3 decades and have used all manner of backup software and systems. I'm now at a place where our needs are not all that great, but my experience with other platforms has allowed the company greater flexibility in restores and, more importantly, in testing and quality assurance of our in-house software. As a small company, we have relatively simple needs, and Veeam has met all of our requirements, so I cannot say that they are deficient in any way.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We work with a large amount of data and its critical that it be backed up with a local copy as well as an offsite copy. Veeam Data Platform allows us to set retention policy’s on our backup jobs without having do much more than click a box and tell how long we want to keep the backups for. We also make use of CDP to an offsite datacenter so in the case of a disaster we can spin up the VM’s there and continue to operate.

Pros

  • CDP
  • Replication
  • Backup Copies
  • Retention

Cons

  • Easier reporting without Veeam one

Likelihood to Recommend

Veeam Data Platform is a wonder tool for all environments. From physical to virtual to NAS appliances you can backup all devices from within a single interface. Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We currently leverage Veeam Data Platform's backup and recovery software to facilitate granular object restores with our Microsoft environment for application such as Active Directory, Exchange, and Windows. The item level restores are intuitive and straight forward. Backups regularly occur smoothly with little to no operating system stunning or end user impact.

Pros

  • Exchange Mailbox Item Level Restores
  • Active Directory Item Level Restores
  • Threat Identification within Backups
  • Centralized Reporting

Cons

  • Support while good, can be slow
  • Evaluate configuration against best practices
  • More robust Knowledge Articles and forums

Likelihood to Recommend

Great for a wide variety of backup sources. Control on Backup Infrastructure (connections to storage) could be improved to allow for more diverse environments. Replication throttling would be useful on the object level. Centralized updates from VeeamOne would be nice to ensure full compatibility amongst all installations.

Veeam Data Platform is amazing

Rating: 10 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Veeam Data Platform to backup our in-house servers, corporate desktops and laptops, and virtualization guests. Veeam Data Platform is also connected to S3-compatible storage where we can replicate on-site backups to immutable cloud storage. The routine backups and notifications have been a huge "life saver" more than once and the backup and restore notifications mean I'm not constantly checking the software interface to see what's happening.

Pros

  • Backup and disaster recovery
  • Simple recovery process
  • Restore to bare-metal or VM

Cons

  • "Slimmed down" version for SMBs
  • Better automation for self-updates

Likelihood to Recommend

Veeam Data Platform has been a perfect solution for our internal backups and minor disaster recovery scenarios. We've had some trouble backing up remote devices and laptops that need to connect over the internet, but the overall experience has been positive. In the few cases where we've needed to contact support, they have been very responsive and knowledgeable.
