Overall Satisfaction with Synology DiskStation

We use a Synology DiskStation in our environment as a basic file server for centralized storage for several different departments. Rather than spin up and maintain an expensive file server, the portability and efficiency of a NAS better suits our needs. It is also set up as a part of our 3-2-1 backup plan.

Pros

  • Ease of setup and management
  • Ability to expand storage if needed
  • Additional roles can be assigned to the NAS by installing packages

Cons

  • None for our use case
  • Lowered storage overhead by switching from a dedicated rackmount server format to a compact NAS
  • Easy to manage and keep updated, cutting back on maintenance times
  • Can be integrated with cloud backup solutions for data redundancy
The Synology DiskStation is easy to set up and manage. The interface is clean and features are well documented. These units are reliable and can be set up to do scheduled integrity checks so failures can be mitigated before they halt business operations. The available packages for expanded roles makes these devices versatile.

In a SOHO environment, the Synology DiskStation is a great device that not only allows for file storage in various data redundancy formats, but it can also take on other roles such as a backup, mail, DNS, or DHCP server. Most models allow for performance improvements with expandable RAM as well.
